NMO - Neuromyelitis Optica
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating disease, thought to be completely different from MS owing to the recent discovery of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) as the main target antigen.
Currently, five different diagnostic techniques are used: indirect immunofluorescence, cell-based assays, radio-immunoprecipitation and fluorine-immunoprecipitation assays, ELISA based on the use of the AQP4 protein, recombinant or extractive.
Toscana Biomarkers is working on the selection of new antigenic molecules for the diagnosis of NMO using the chemical reverse approach already successfully applied to the development of other immunoassays. This project is supported through funds granted by Regione Toscana (August 2010) .
